I am poem

Were I am From Poem

Vinnie Skalka
Block Period: 2/3
I am proud to be me
I know how to love
I know how to cry
I am learning to live
But I am afraid to die
My arms are wide
My hands are open
In this game of life I am a meer token
I am the one your afraid to meet
But once you get to know me
My heart is oh so deep

Proud of my heritage
Polish, Chech and Italian too
I am a boy from the sun and surf
Still here on the land of my birth
I am a California boy
From Cali burritos and water toys
From water parks and Shamu too
Where we say things like duuuuude

From waxed boards and crashing waves
From a place were hours fade into days
A place where waves very by the day
A place were it is warm at night so I can lay
I am from a place where money is spent
But also earned, day by day
Were you can be able to say
I am from a sweet, gentle place by the bay
San Diego I am here to stay.

---R.E.M ------My Ishmael---

Project Description:
We were given a book to read, The book was MY Ishmael and after we had read the book we were given a list of projects we could do. They were so many ones from painting and others singing.

Process:
I had to first get my project approved, I wrote my poem which took many drafts.Next I had to sketch out the painting. And finally after drafts and drafts i was allowed to start painting.

Reflection:
I learned how to paint with a different type of paints on a canvas
I faced a lot of problem like grammar and spelling in my poem, and with my painting my paint went bad so that also delayed me a couple days.

If I Had To Change Anything:
I would change the size of my painting it is a little bit large to me.

How Have You Learned From This Project:
This helped my and a way I might grow is my artistic ability's and poetic abilities. I also learned how to take owner ship of my work and through drafting and revision something can become an art work.

I Believe Project Reflection

Project Description:
Our project is quiet simple, we had to pick one of our beliefs and write an essay on it, then we listened to others I believe essay. We need to write a essay that is 400-500 words maximum.

Process:
Lots of steps were taken to get to the final stage, I had to first write 30 things I believe in. Then we had to pick one and start our first draft, then lots of corrections and drafts followed. I also had the teacher grade it for grammar mistakes.

Reflection:
- I learned what I really believe in, I know now were I stand on different matters.
- I was faced with a lot of challenges but one big challenge I overcame is how to manage my time, it was quite simple it required my full attention though to finish the project.
- I would not of changed anything I fell my project is fine and I think it hits my believe on the head.
- This will help me later on because I will not be so thick headed on my choices in friends, family and acquaintances.

Evelyn Glennie

I will remember her prefonmance due to the fact that her energy was all there, I am trying to say that this is what she loves to do and she wants to teach people and change the way people feel about music.

when I was listening to her I got the feeling that she wanted us to look further than just useing our ears. She wanted us to feel it through out our body the vibrations and how the instruments work and play. I was very inspired.

The aduience was most influeced when she used the louder instuments and when she talked about her personal storys and how she lost her hearing. and how she went to a musical school and how she was regected and then faught for her right to go there.

"Each person experiences music in their own way"? is a quote she said it really touched evrry one ca

What stuck me- Was how the story ishmael is teaching us so much about our culture and how i can now connect things.
I agree with the concepts because they are very logical and they make sense
In the real world we have to explain and show our culture every day
my family members agree with the topics i talked about and the discussions we had were very interesting

Dialectic Journal

In My Ishmael the chapters called School Daze and School Daze II, are we interesting topic to talk about they talk about Rachel Sokolow and how Ishmael watched grow up and start school and how excited she was but as she grew older here lack of interest increased. As Rachel Sokolow grew away from school Ishmael grew closer wanting more knowledge. Here is a quote from My Ishmael, “People imagine
That they'd like to see their children enter the workplace with really useful business skills, but if they
Actually did so, they'd immediately begin competing for jobs with their older siblings and their parents,
Which would be catastrophic. And if graduates came out of school with advanced skills, who would bag
the groceries, Julie? Who would do the sweeping up? Who would pump the gas? Who would do the
filing? Who would flip the burgers?"
"I suppose it would turn into an age thing."
"You mean you'd tell Johnny Smith and Jennie Jones that they can't have the jobs they want, not
because others are more qualified but because others are older."

5 weeks 3 days and 6 hours

In the dark alley ways of Compton, LA there lived a man whose life was twisted by a past of gang violence and drug abuse. A man willing to put all of it on the line for the one he loved………………………………………………………..

I just checked myself out of rehab today. I have been going there for about 6 weeks now but I have only been clean for only 5 weeks 3 days and 6 hours. That is a big thing for me. I have used drugs all my life. It has been so hard trying to quit. Having that desire, that need, that want for the drugs, waiting sometimes I got so tired of waiting I would scream “WHY!” But no matter how much I yelled or screamed, my cravings were still so bad I needed to inflict pain upon my self just to stop. No matter how hard I try, a little bit of drugs could start my addiction right back up again and I don’t want that.

I miss her more than words can ever say. She meant every thing to me. I look down at my wedding band and I feel the pain. Sometimes I can’t look at it because of all the guilt I feel. She was the sun in the morning that brightened my day and the stars at night showing me the way home. She knew the risk. She had wanted to date me, a low-life thug who wanted out, but kept getting dragged back in.
Throughout my life I have had my share of problems, but my largest problem was running into Chris, also known in his gang as ‘Gunner-ship.” He was given his name for countless acts upon the public such as drive-bys, robberies, and hostage stick ups. To him I was just a tool in his game of life. But one day he took it too far and tried to turn on me.
The day was calm and cool, my wife and I were coming home from church. We had just approached an intersection, there were no cars in sight as we waited at the slowest red light in the city. There was an ear piercing screech, a black car with tinted windows came flying by us.
The passenger was male. He was bald and had a lazy eye. He pulled out a mini Uzi. Then right there time froze for me , life then flashed before my eyes, my first birthday, then my parents anniversary but the moment which I remember the most clear was my first kiss, the smell of fresh roses, calm gust of air and my wife looking at me with her big blue eyes and soft lips. She wore a dress that looked like it was crafted for a god. Her hair bounced as we laughed, then she leaned over to my and gave me a big kiss on the lips.
Then reality came back. But at the last few seconds I had with her I starred at my wife, her eyes big as flying saucers but the last sound that came from her mouth was a spine shivering scream. He unloaded 60 rounds into my wife the bullets pierced my car and wife like a hot knife through butter. I was helpless all I could do was watch my wife get murdered. Then there was silence as I gazed at my wife. The window covered in a thick layer of her blood. Her eyes were rolled back and blood was starting to pool by the floor mats, my eyes started to sweat and my heart raced. I knew she was not the target I was, because I stole drugs from him.
Now it’s my turn to get revenge. I plan to kill everyone in that street gang. I packed my car hiding my guns in the trunk. As I make a mental check list in my head I think, fed the dog? Check. Shut all the doors? Check. Crap! My TV is still on, got to turn that off. I might as well say good bye to Mr. Frank, my neighbor. He is a good neighbor.
I walk next door to Frank’s house, he is an older man. He has a perfect lawn, fresh and green, but his house can use some fixing up. The paint is peeling and there are rusted pipes everywhere. Frank is a very talkative person. He told me a lot of stories, but the ones I recall the best are the ones about him in the army. He was a strapping young lad eager to get out there and shoot the enemy. But through all the wars Frank’s body was the one that took the damage. Frank stumbled to the door and placed his hand on the wall bracing himself upright. He wore a wife beater t-shirt with a beer stain on it. His shorts were grey and tight and on his feet he wore socks and sandals.

“Who is there?” Frank hollered.

I replied “It’s me Rob, how are you doing today sir?”

“Well I am doing good, do you want to come inside?” as Frank scratched his bald head.
“Frank can you do me a favor and watch the house? I will be gone on a trip for a little bit”
Frank replied with a smile on his face “Sure, but only if you watch the Wheel with me later this week?”

“No problem.” I said back.

Frank stared into my eyes. He sees that I am going through a hard time. Frank wants to help, but since his heart is failing he needs to stay home most of the time. Since her murder Frank has been worried about me. He is also worried about what I am going to do.
There it is, the hang out for that drug ridden street gang that worked for “Gunner-ship.” Here we go I say to myself. I step out of my car with two pistols in my hands and a grenade in my pocket ready for when it is needed. Then a chill went down my body and freezing me dead cold, as I realize that this is not my way of life it is my need for revenge.
Then something made me snap out of my epiphany. Pain shot up my leg then in my chest as two guys came out of the hang out with guns held up. They were both drunk and stumbling and they had seen my guns and scared, they fired. They had known who I was too because the gang was out to get me. Then I went black, my body was laying there on the cold hard ground, blood pouring from my wounds like an open faucet.
I woke up in the hospital one hour later. I was bandaged up like a mummy. The doctors said I was not going to make it through the night. Then I found out that Frank was dead. He had been on his way to the hospital to see me, when he was hit head-on by a drunk driver and was killed instantly. I felt helpless, as these rivers started coming from my eyes and I started to cough up this dark red liquid. I felt pain but it did not hurt as much as the feeling of losing the last person who cared for me. As I sit there, I remember the time I had with her and Frank, all the dinners and movie nights. The liquid did not stop until I was dead. The dark liquid filled my lungs and I died slowly and most painfully.

Medicine, Article.

Medicine

I was reading this article and I had came across this really interesting piece of information.
“The good news is that, at least in terms of the next 10 years, prescription-drug costs will probably decline or moderate for many consumers,” says Dan Carpenter, the co-director of Harvard University’s Initiative on Medications and Society.
This means drugs and medicine will cost less for the us citizens.

I thought this was an also cool piece of info i would share.

Four Drugs Set to Hit Pharmacy Shelves This Year

All-in-One Heart Pill: POLYPILL
Ferrer Laboratories brings out a pill that includes three drugs to protect against heart attacks and costs less to buy than the individual pills. Combining aspirin and drugs to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, the pill could make patients more likely to take their medicine.

Time Travlers Pillar

Project description
-During the time travelers project we were given a civilization and we had to do a lot of research on there civilization. We had to figure out what made them collapse and then we were given tree choices of items which then we had then to send one back and see if that would help our civilization. The choices were irrigation system, trebuchet and a modern day sailboat.

Process
-We had went throw a long process of drafting and revision but one of the most challenging things we had to do was find the research for our civilization.

Reflection:

- What did you learn?

Well I learned how to step back and let some one else take over a project because I am very controlling.

- What challenges did you encounter?

Working our time into manageable periods was a another challenge.

- What would you do the same or different?

I would manage my time more carefully.

- How will this help you later?

I can now work in large groups and split the work up fairly.

We had to figure out what made them collapse and then we were given tree choices of items which then we had then to send one back and see if that would help our civilization. The choices were irrigation system, trebuchet and a modern day sailboat.

Process
-We had to go throw a lot of drafting and revision to get our final product. One of our groups biggest challenges was the laws. We had to have at least 6 people review it and point out stuff that did not make sense or they could not understand. My saying is "Better two have four eyes review something other than your own."
Final Product------------------------>

-Recap Questions-
How has drafting and revising influenced the success of your project?
-Drafting and revision helped us stay on track the whole time putting us to the challenge of make it better.
In what ways did communication help or hurt your project?
-Well communication did help my team a lot it made us talk out the problems with the principle posters.
What have you learned from this project?
-I learned much about a civilization and how to better work with others.
What challenges did you encounter?
-Well a lot of mathematical issues came up with cutting and measuring.
What have you learned from this project that could be applied later?
-If I am put in a situation where I need to work in a group I can contribute.
If you could do the project again, what would you do differently and why?
-I would manage my time better to get more work done.

Hero Project Reflection

1) How does a hero become a hero the one question I can answer the best to my ability a hero becomes a hero when I see that person do something that goes above what is called upon them a hero does not always have to be a fireman or a police officer it can be some one who does the simple things that help you or others.

2) This is my project description. In this project we had too pick a hero that did something heroic to us and we had to write about it. Well I had done some brain storming and I picked my father then we did some drafts and more drafts and more critiques then we switched we other classes and made up our final and we had too have two pictures of our heroes.

3) My process was very interesting when we had to pick our heroes I did not really have one so that threw me off at first then our brain storming got me thinking and drafts became easier after the first one all the editing after that was simple and not doing the work on time really made things harder.

4) I learned a lot from this because I did not realize how big of a hero my father was and how much he did for me. I encountered a lot of challenges like getting the facts and the details the drafts were also challenging. I would have not changed any thing except more facts and dialogue because it helps to have more than you need than not to have enough.

5) There are Habits of Mind that we have to use and I chose evidence because I think I used a lot of it through out this project.

Origin of Zero?

What is the origin of zero? How did we indicate nothingness before zero?

The first evidence we have of zero is from the Sumerian culture in Mesopotamia, some 5,000 years ago. There is nothing before zero because it has no multiples and can’t be squared. Zero is the standard it is the set number it’s either positive or negative but zero is not positive or negative.

The Big Move

Vroom, vroom as the 1970 Chevy impala convertible came roaring down the streets, and its rusty gray and blue exterior the car had smelt like dirty laundry and sweat, Vince had felt sick to his stomach the fist time they opened the car door since it was a used car it was in good condition, as a loud BANG!!! Came out of the exhaust pipe and a cloud of smog came flowing out, it would have made a hatchback seem like a gift from the gods. A giant hole sat right underneath Vince’s feet which nearly gave him frost bite on the way out to California, because leaving in December, in Pittsburg was a good idea or was it? As Vince ponders this question thinking what if he is wrong about moving? The car had a heater that rattled like an earthquake. He was thinking, “I am going to be moving to California and get a steady paying job, find a place I can call my own then I can settle down and start my family.”
There Vince sat wearing blue jeans and a t shirt that was plain dull and out of style. His hair blew in the wind as he drove down the streets, mountains, plains on his way the wind came whirling in like a howling tornado, through gaping holes; the amount of duck tape and paper towels it took to patch up most of the holes was amazing. As Vince turns to his buddy, “Ok dude I can’t wait till we get there, the smell of the ocean, the warm temperature and all the cool job opportunities.”
Eric responded, “Like man, we are going to get a lot of hot girls out in California.”
Vince hesitated for a second and said, “I am sorry man you’re going to have to babe hunt without me I’ve already got my eye on some pretty tang, back in Pittsburg.”
Eric responded, “Cool that’s fine by the way, when we get there you will meet my grandmother she is the one who is letting us stay there till we can get our feet on the ground, and make a life out here in sunny California.”
“Hey Eric I’ve got a question. What do you feel right now and what will you miss back at home?”
“Well I feel happy but also sad because we are leaving behind our old lives, well I know one thing I will miss, I will miss waking up in the morning and walking out into the snow to fetch the morning paper, it might seem stupid but the feeling of warmth against the cold frozen earth.” As the car rattled and the stereo blasting Vince thought of his new adventure, and also his new start on life.”

Anglea

Catching the signal from one of her friends, Angela brushed her skirt, took a deep breath and walked towards where he was sitting. As Angela walked over to this mysterious boy that she had been watching for a couple of weeks now here heart pounded like an African drum to the beat of a war song. The boy’s hair sat there flawlessly his hair short and black as the starry night. His eyes were like flames dance around his brain thinking, waiting, wondering.
As Angela brushed her hair out of her eyes she peered over his shoulder. The boy was repeating why, why, why, why me. I asked him if he was ok. He peered over his shoulder and said I am mourning my fathers death he has kicked the bucket. I did not know him that well but as I saw a tear roll down his cold white cheek Angela could not help it to start crying.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

The chilling air as it passes through my nasal cavities, the sound of rocks being crushed under the feet of walking men who dare to venture up this peak. Every footstep counts and we walk a fine line between life and death, as our veins run cold like the artic waters, as our muscles get tight like rubber bands being stretched to their limit.

Words on signs mean nothing to us as we walk to our goal, air is now brisker than ever, our muscles tighter than before, our minds full of pure hope as we break the altitude, we talk of stories and tales we have heard by passing hikers trying to complete their goals as well as we try to complete ours.

The trail is even narrower the ledges are now steeper. Every step now is more deadly then the last, as my cheeks pull back and my eyes glow. I see the peak. My eyes water now like a leaky pipe, my lungs are trying to take in air, we pass abecedarian hikers who do not know what they are doing. They thought they could ascend up its steep ledges with no training, but I have done months of training and hard work.

Our final steps to the summit were the most glorious. On top of the mountain was a small shack. Just past it was a marker that represented a U.S geological survey. I did not stop, no matter what, even if my legs cramped so much I could not walk, I would crawl, to that marker I would to touch it, and I would know that I had done something that I had to push myself to complete.
When I stepped out onto that ledge, the gusting winds had a sudden surge from underneath and the gust was very chilling. This knocked me off balance and I fell to my knees, I crawled to the marker and I touch it, sheer pleasure of my accomplishment. A rush now surges through my acing, trembling body. Word count 350

humanities, sound commet

Through My Ears Into A Different World

The sound was like an orchestra to my ears. A sweet symphony that floated through the speakers of the old computer. The sound had a very high pitch and made my ears just want more of this sound. The strings buzzed in my head I had to match the tune but i could not all I knew about it was a stringed instrument. All i remember is the buzzing like bees a a pitch I could only hear. But as I realized, I was not alone people around my jerked there heads in my direction and there ears engaged in the sound that was In familiar to them.

Locker Problem

1000 Locker Problem Solution

Vinnie Skalka
October 2nd, 2009

In the locker problem, there are 1000 students/lockers. The 1st student opened every locker. And the 2nd student closed every other locker. Then the 3rd student changes the state of every three lockers and a 4th student changes the state of every fourth locker. Every number has as factors itself and 1. Therefore, every locker is opened on the first pass. Every locker number that is prime was only touched twice by the student because prime numbers can only be divided by 1 and itself. So all prime lockers are now shut and their state will not be changed again.
At the end there only 31 lockers open and all the rest are closed. In order for a locker to be open its state had to be changed an odd amount of times. In order for their state to be open, the locker number was a perfect square. I found the pattern by sitting down and actually writing the problem out, but I only did 100 lockers. It matters that the perfect squares have odd factors because if it had an even amount of factors the state of the locker is closed. But an odd amount of factors its state is open.

Dear diary,

I did not do much this weekend but chill out on my cot and sleep. but the i sat up in a sleepy manner like a swaying tree in the wind. I open my crusty eyes and i see a book siting on the table just laying there not been moved for a long time. I sand to my feet and the book is old grey the cover has faded. I ask myself do i dare open this old grey forgot ton book that i had never seen before.

I open the book as i start to read my head is full of mystery and magic i have never read anything like this before drama, death, confusion and mayhem its was right up my ally way. after reading for the whole weekend i sat there baffled because i read a whole week end not even venturing out side for some clean fresh air.

the honey house was the hottest place there only the fan to keep my cool but yet no matter the heat the book was the best thing i had ever read even when i left the school. but i could not shake the feeling i had forgot some thing.... then it hit me i forgot to eat this morning the hunger rush went through out my body in a crazy way.

Hero

Hero

One of my hero's is super man he is average man but when he is needed he is there and he has now problem he is all ways willing to help no matter the problem. Superman has defeated all kinds of evil villains but his only weakness is kryptonight. i wan to be like him in his image because he is caring and is not self fish he cares for others before himself.
